What is this about?

We’ve noticed high round trip time in our network testing.

This means there is latency in your connection to the other participants or media servers that is too high. The higher the round trip time, the worse the connection is.

This can be caused by a few reasons, the top of them being the physical distance between you and the destination of the media you are sending; or the use of a VPN that shapes and processes traffic.

Potential risks

High round trip time usually indicates a latency issue.

Latency affects the perceived user experience by adding lag to the conversation. It might also indicate poor network routing which can lead to other media issues such as packet loss and low bitrate.

Suggested actions to take

  • Validate that media gets routed to the correct locations and regions if the application you are using is geographically distributed

  • If you are using a VPN, check if you get forced or routed through locations that are less than optimized for real time media traffic

  • See if there is a better ISP offering lower latencies towards the internet. These would be the ones that are often chosen by gamers
