What is this about?

One of the tests we conduct is focused on understanding throughput of UDP traffic on your network. Unlike traditional speed testing, this is less about the ability to watch videos and more about the ability to conduct real time conversations online, which requires lower latencies.

When we notice sporadic degradation (meaning the network isn’t stable when attempting low latency interactions), or just low throughput of UDP traffic, we flag it for you.

Potential risks

Low throughput ends up affecting media quality. It will manifest itself in failing to connect from time to time, but more importantly in varying media quality throughout meetings you conduct - sometimes to the point of being unusable.

Suggested actions to take

  • There might be other applications running in your local network competing for bandwidth. If anyone is playing online cloud games, watching Netflix or similar streaming services - these may affect performance, especially if you are not on a broadband connection. See if you can get others “off” the network to improve performance

  • This might be related to network quality. If this is the case, then there should be additional recommendations for you as well to review and try out

  • If in general the network is great, but managed by your company, it might be that it is being throttled to limit access due to internal policies. You may want to contact the network administrator to help you out here
