Message: A cellular network is in use for this session.

What is this about?

We have detected that this session has at least one peer connection that got connected over a cellular network. There is nothing bad about it, but it may cause a reduction in media quality.

Depending on where you expect your users to be, this might or might not be an issue.

Potential risks

Cellular connections are quite finicky with their quality and performance. They might be good one second and unusable the next. Conducting calls and meetings over cellular is possible but is inadvisable if you have other alternatives.

If you are making your calls from a static location on a regular basis, try to figure out a way to be on a wired ethernet connection or at the very least a WiFi connection.

Assuming a user in this meeting complained about the media quality, it might stem from the fact that one or more users was on cellular. If this is the case, then you should also be able to see that in quality metrics on the session such as packet loss, jitter and rtt.

Suggested actions to take

  • Switch to an Ethernet connection if you can, especially if you are conducting your calls and meetings from the same location most of the time

  • If you cannot use Ethernet, make sure you know where the WiFi access point you are connected to is, and try to be as close to it as possible. That will improve reception and by extension, the quality of your calls and meetings

  • Prefer using the newer 5 GHz WiFi connections over the older 2.4 GHz ones. They are better

  • If all else fails and you need to use cellular, then at least try to find a location with better reception to take your calls
